And it is performers such as songwriter and prime vocalist Steffen Morrison that keep the “old sounds” alive with a delightful new twist that will seduce music connoisseurs and younger audiences alike.
His voice features a vibrato and warm rawness that carries on the legacy of artists such as Otis Redding, Seal or John Legend.
In 2009 the ever stylish and dedicated performer started attracting audiences’ attention upon winning the semi-finalist position in what is considered Holland’s most popular non televised musical talent competition, De Grote Prijs van Nederland. Since then, Steffen Morrison has been on a steady path to a wider audience, leaving his mark wherever he performs.
Morrison’s versatile talents have been widely recognised by other current soul-heroes, media and the business world. In 2012 Steffen Morrison performed as opening act for both Joss Stone and Raphael Saadiq. His debut album‘Revealed’ has been nominated for the Edison Jazz Award in 2011. Meanwhile Steffen’s composition ‘Shake It’ is the theme song for a worldwide campaign by British sportswear company Reebok for their Easytone brand.
In late 2012 Steffen Morrison partnered with UK independent StreetSoul records and released two songs, one of which went on to reach the number 4 position on the UK soulchart as well as being included in several BBC soul playlists.
In the fall of 2013 he received national recognition as a competitor in the popular TV show ‘The Voice Of Holland’. During the blind audition performance Steffen received an overwhelming response and acceptance from all four jurors. His spellbinding cover of Donny Hathaway’s ‘A Song For You’ was a trending topic on social media that night moving his rendition of the song to the top position of the iTunes top 300 within the hour. The Donny Hathaway album ‘A Collection’ also reached the number 1 postion of the iTunes album charts that night, making Steffen’s performance the single most succesfull audition in the history of the program in the Netherlands.
In 2014 he made a guest appearance as a performing artist and composer on the album 'Sittin' In With' by Dutch deepfunk collective The Eminent Stars. His song ‘The Club’ is issued as the lead single for their debut album, released by Germany based label Tramp Records. Meanwhile he continues to write new songs for his upcoming releases.
As a performer Steffen has already appeared at prestigious festivals such as the Dutch The Hague Jazz (2011) and Worms: Jazz and Joy Festival in Germany that same year. Between 2009 and 2013 he regularly toured the club and festival circuit in The Netherlands. In 2015 Steffen has inked a record deal with D.E.M.P. Records owned by famous Dutch writer and producer Tjeerd P. Oosterhuis.
